Maxville Gathering A Success

1st Annual Maxville Gathering
August 8, 2009

(Maxville, OR.) – While there might not be much left of the town of Maxville, the people of Wallowa nevertheless retain the charm, the warmth, and the spirit that was no doubt prevalent in that small logging town many years ago.

Nearly 200 folks came out met for the First Annual Maxville Gathering. While here everyone was treated to guided tours of the last remaining cabin and the surrounding grounds. On stage many participated in storytelling and song; among them was the Red Hat Club who recognized the efforts of MHIC and endorsed the event.
Many booths were set up that offered attendees fresh local food and activities for the kids. The local Fire Station participated and their game of “Guess how old Smokey the Bear is” was fun for all.
While there were plenty of entertaining activities, there was also some of our very own history in the making.
A booth was set up that presented the attendees an exhibit of Maxville photographs. Another booth was set up to scan and collect new photographs that attendees may have brought with them. In addition, several valuable oral history interviews were conducted and recorded at the Gathering.
Back in Maxville’s heyday baseball was the favorite past-time and our good friends at the Bar-B Ranch (located just up the road from Maxville) sponsored a rousing game for the gathering’s attendees. Additional thanks for the Gathering's Storytellers:
Thanks to generous contributions from local and regional sponsors, The Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center was able to provide a fun and educational experience for our community. We are already planning for next years gathering and hope to see more of our friends there.
