Unique Proposal For Heritage Center Site

The City of Wallowa may be celebrating a new home for the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center in the near future.
A Land Use Bill introduced by Senator Ron Wyden May 21, 2009, to return the conveyed Wallowa Compound to the City of Wallowa. This Compound would be purposed as a public use site to house the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center’s cultural railroad logging industry artifacts, exhibits, local African American migration historical accounts as well as other developing archeological and educational programs.
A true structural treasure of Wallowa County. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corp during the late 1930’s, the Wallowa Compound’s architectural design has changed little over the past years and a plan to restore it to former historical standards is part of the Heritage Center’s vision.
Recently nominated for the National Register of Historical Places, its location within the economically depressed town of Wallowa on the Hell’s Canyon Scenic Byway offers a unique opportunity for the struggling community.
